Eric Clapton - Roosevelt Stadium - Jersey City, NJ 7.7.74.
Cream was one of my most favorite bands and when I found out Clapton was touring again, I jumped at the chance to get tickets.
I went with some older kids from my neighborhood in a '69 blue metal flake Chevelle SS. We got there early and made it all the way up front. Spent the day in the hot sun before Clapton finally came on. I don’t remember much from the show, I was high as a kite, but I do remember Freddie King coming on and sitting in for “Have You Ever Loved A Woman”
Getting home was almost a disaster for me. I got separated from my ride and was lost after the show. Asked a cop how to get back to Brooklyn… he looked at me like I was crazy and told me to take a PATH train from “Journal Square” and pointed in the direction I needed to go.
I was walking the dark deserted streets of Jersey City when a car pulled up next to me, holy crap,,, but it was a family, who asked me what I was doing there. I told them I was lost and needed to get to Journal Square. They drove me to a main thoroughfare and told me the bus would take me to Journal Square. Finally I got to Journal Square and had to sneak through the turnstile cause I had no money. I made it to Manhattan where I took familiar trains back to Canarsie. When I got home my parents were flipped out, where the heck were you !?!
A few weeks later, I went to the Dead show there, but that's another story.
